FLORA and FAUNA

  • { FIG. 1 Campylorhynchus brunneicapillus. } Named for its cacti nesting habits, the cactus wren is Arizona’s official State Bird, and the largest wren species in the U.S. Cactus wrens mate for life and work together to aggressively defend their nests and even destroy other birds’ nests. Fun fact: Though it’s not listed as endangered, as a native songbird, the cactus wren is protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, one of our country's oldest environmental laws.

  • A roadrunner

{ FIG. 2 Geococcyx californianus. } The greater roadrunner is amusing to see in action, and can often be spotted from the trail. In addition to preying upon almost any creature it can secure, the greater roadrunner has become especially adept at devouring rattlesnakes. Fun fact: Roadrunners mate for life and the pair will fiercely defend their territory.

  • { FIG. 3 Callipepla gambelii. } Both male and female Gambel’s quail are easily identified by their distinctive, plumed top knots as they move swiftly through desert brush and undergrowth. Their nest sites are usually hidden beneath dense shrubs or rocks, and lined with twigs, grass stems, leaves, and feathers. Fun fact: The Gambel's quail is named in honor of William Gambel, a 19th-century naturalist, ornithologist, and botanist who was a noted explorer of the Southwestern United States.

  • { FIG. 4 Sylvilagus audubonii. } The most common of all the desert-dwelling mammals, desert cottontails are frequently spotted — and preyed upon — throughout the Sonoran. The small, cautious rabbits use their tails as alarms, raising them to show off the large white fur patch on the bottom as a warning to other cottontails. Fun fact: Cottontails have the ability to survive for short periods in extreme temperatures up to approximately 113°F.

  • { FIG. 5 Auriparus flaviceps. } The only bird in the genus Auriparus, verdins are not closely related to any other bird in the western hemisphere. Unafraid of weather extremes, these adaptable birds can be seen during the hottest summers and coldest winters, subsisting on tiny insects and spiders. Fun fact: Verdin eggs come in charming shades of pale green and blue-green, and are speckled with reddish-brown dots concentrated at the bottoms of the shells.

  • { FIG. 6 Cactaceae. } From the golden hedgehog and Santa Cruz beehive to the teddy bear cholla, there are 59 species of cactus native to Arizona. Although they have vastly different appearances, these cacti have evolved in similar ways to flourish in the desert, including protective spines and water-retentive tissues. Fun fact: An iconic symbol of the American Southwest, the saguaro cactus can live up to 200 years and reach heights ranging from 15 to 50 feet.
